Many certainties of Lindow Man’s life can be determined through the use of scientific evaluation and investigation of his remains. This evaluation can give us an insight into his lifestyle and the challenges or hardships people of his time faced. The results of this analysis show:
Height, Weight and Age: He was a healthy male and was about 25 years old at the time of his death. He weighed about 64 kilograms and was well built. Archaeologists were able to estimate his height by calculating the length of his bones in his upper arm. This estimate shows that his height is between 1.68 m and 1.73 m.
Social Status: Characteristics of his body include healthy teeth, a trimmed beard and manicured nails. These features and the fact that his body shows little evidence of hard manual labour suggests that he was of a higher status in society, possibly owning slaves to do the work.
Diet: Examination of his stomach revealed that his last meal was a griddle cake made from wheat and barley. Other traces of food in his stomach suggest that his diet consisted mainly of cereals and bread.
Health: In depth analysis of his teeth show no visible cavities suggesting that his diet of cereal and bread would not have contained large amounts of sugar or other harmful elements. This and the fact that he weighed 64 kilograms indicate that he was a healthy individual but after scientific evaluation it was found that he suffered from osteoarthritis and presented with an infestation of parasitic worms.
