Who Is Lindow Man and Site of Discovery
Lindow Man, which has been labelled one of the best archaeological unearthing’s of the decade, is the naturally preserved bog body of a man dating back to the Roman Era in Britain. He was was discovered on 1 August 1984 in a peat bog at Lindow Moss near Wilmslow in Cheshire, North West England.

Events Which Brought Remains to Light
The Body of Lindow Man was discovered when a peat cutter who was responsible for keeping the conveyor belt (that was used to harvest peat) free of debris spotted what he believed was a piece of wood and threw it out. Upon further inspection what he thought was a piece of wood was actually the remains of a human leg.
Rick Turner, who was at the time the newly appointed county archaeologist was called onto the site of the gruesome discovery and given the task of searching for evidence of artefacts and excavating if needed. He states that “what followed were the most exciting days of my archaeological career”. "I was taken out on to the moss and shown where the previous day's peat had been taken from. Walking the uncut sections, I found a flap of dark, tanned skin projecting from below. Reporting my discovery to the police, we agreed I would be given a day to excavate the remains." Once the site and the previous findings were recorded and sampled, "Lindow Man was lifted - within his block of surrounding peat - on his way to international celebrity”.

The peat bogs of Europe have been a source of archaeological finds, in particular discoveries of human remains (bog bodies). As these remains are so well preserved, they are able to give us an insight into the life of those who precede us. Peat bogs are comprised of organic material, water and decayed vegetation and are generally found in acidic wetland areas. As a result of the lack of oxygen and high levels of carbon and methane organic materials found in peat bogs are naturally preserved, decaying at a very slow rate.
